Blog Action Day 2016

It would seem that there is no official Blog Action Day or theme this year however the event is set to return next year and the small team of volunteers who set up and manage the event have encouraged bloggers to post today anyway, about something of significance to them.

I have thought about this and chosen to promote compassion and tolerance with regard to the massive issue of immigration.

This has been a hot topic for such a long time, however things seemed to have escalated in recent years and become out of any sense of control. In addition the recent vote in the UK to leave the European Union, with immigration seemingly a strong driving force for some peoples decision to vote leave, seems to have sparked an outbreak of racial attacks throughout the country. While I am sure terrorist events have not helped with this matter immigration is a completely separate issue.

I read daily news stories about the immigration camp at Calais, immigrants loosing their lives at sea throughout Europe, or being found in vehicles travelling through the UK. According to the BBC over 1 million applications for asylum were received in the European Union last year. No estimates have been made for the people arriving and not applying.

These people have in many cases been forced to leave their homes, possibly their families, certainly their possessions, under significant fear for their lives and are looking for a safe home, how can we possibly deny them that? It is no different to what we would expect for ourselves.

It seems to me that the only way we can tackle this effectively is to develop a united approach to immigration. There is no benefit to any one country closing its borders to everyone, however neither can one country solve the problem.

Personally I couldn't think of a worse time for us to leave the EU, I did not vote to leave and strongly feel we are always better together, nations united and open to debate however our leaving seems assured.

This is a massive topic that I am only touching on briefly, I do not have all of the answers and feel the part I can play will be small however promoting compassion and tolerance seems a good place to start. No good can come from closing doors, or dare I say building walls, and this problem is not going to resolve itself. Lets face it head on and promote solutions, and in the meantime remember we are all human.

  1. Good post. I lived in the UK until I was 30, and watching the Brexit vote was like watching an old friend cut off their own limbs. Politics is a crazy game.

    1. Thanks Stewart, we are still reeling and hoping against hope that there will be a last minute U-turn. I have yet to meet someone who thinks leaving is a good idea. Best wishes to you and yours.
